چکیده

Dust particles in space may appear as clusters of individual grains. The morphology of these clusters could be of a fractal or more compact nature. To investigate how the cluster morphology influences the calculated extinction of different clusters in the wavelength range 0.1 − 100 μm, we have preformed extinction calculations of three-dimensional clusters consisting of identical touching spherical particles arranged in three different geometries: prefractal, simple cubic and face-centered cubic. In our calculations we find that the extinction of prefractal and compact clusters are of the same order of magnitude. For the calculations, we have performed an in-depth comparison of the theoretical predictions of extinction coefficients of multi-sphere clusters derived by rigorous solutions, on the one hand, and popular discrete-dipole approximations, on the other. This comparison is essential if one is to assess the degree of reliability of model calculations made with the discrete-dipole approximations, which appear in the literature quite frequently without an adequate accounting of their validity.

Interstellar Dust Grains

This review surveys the observed properties of interstellar dust grains: the wavelength-dependent extinction of starlight, including absorption features, from UV to infrared; optical luminescence; infrared emission; microwave emission; optical, UV, and X-ray scattering by dust; and polarization of starlight and of infrared emission. The relationship between presolar grains in meteorites and the...

Dust Structure and Composition Within Molecular Clouds and Cores

Title of Dissertation: Dust Structure and Composition Within Molecular Clouds and Cores Nicholas Lane Chapman, Doctor of Philosophy, 2007 Dissertation directed by: Professor Lee G. Mundy Department of Astronomy We observed three molecular clouds and four isolated cores at wavelengths from 3.6− 24 μm. The clouds we observed were Ophiuchus, Perseus, and Serpens and the cores were L204C-2, L1152, ...

Ultraviolet Dust Grain Properties in Starburst Galaxies: Evidence from Radiative Transfer Modeling and Local Group Extinction Curves

This paper summarizes the evidence of the ultraviolet properties of dust grains found in starburst galaxies. Observations of starburst galaxies clearly show that the 2175 Å feature is weak or absent. This can be the result of radiative transfer effects (mixing the dust and stars) or due to dust grains which do not have this feature. Spherical DIRTY radiative transfer models imply that it is not...

The scattering and extinction properties of nanodiamonds

The study of scattering and extinction properties of possible nanodiamond grains in the ISM are reported. Calculations using Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA) for varying ellipsoidal shapes and sizes from 2.5 to 10 nm are considered. Nanodiamonds show negligible extinction from IR to near-UV and very sharp far-UV rise. Comparison with observations rule out possibility of independent nanodiamo...

Dust and the Far-uv Spectral Energy Distribution of Quasars

The spectral energy distribution of quasars shows a sharp steepening of the continuum shortward of ≃ 1100 Å. We present a new dust extinction model consisting of crystalline carbon grains. We analyze the unusual extinction properties of this dust and proceed to show how the observed UV spectral break can be successfully modelled by crystalline carbon dust.
